π° dusk is developed on Debian Trixie under the GNOME desktop environment and should work on most Debian derivatives like Ubuntu. π° dusk also supports macOS and is tested in a virtual machine.
When you create or change a file, it is never written to disk as-is. It only exists virtually in RAM while π° dusk is running. When the virtual file system is modified, files are encrypted and shredded into uniform chunks. Those chunks are then spread around to any other devices in your network running π° dusk.
If you have no linked devices, chunks are stored enqueue until you do. The structure of the virtual file system tree is saved seperately into an encrypted and compressed file that only contains file and folder names and their hash.
You can recover a complete π° dusk file system using only a secret key and URL. Open π° dusk and select Snapshots > Create a Snapshot. The currently mounted file system will be compressed, encrypted, shredded, and distributed to your network.
Can also backup to a series of USB drives in the Sneakernets menu.
To restore a backup, select Snapshots > Restore a Snapshot, then select the snapshot from the file dialog.
Yes! There are two ways to share a file. First, anything in your Public/
folder is PUBLIC! Use it to create links to documents, pictures, videos, etc!
If you have π° dusk installed, then you can open dusk://
links that will
connect devices
and open public files with π° dusk.
Example public dusk://
URL:
dusk://828206ab2ebf90e07bfba32b73ade181b1eb5aa0.wdav/In_Defense_of_Smashing_Cameras-English.pdf
For users who are not running π° dusk, they can connect and view your Public/ folder using Tor and a WebDAV client.
You can also drop files directly and privately to a specific user or device. π° dusk offers a special Dropbox/ folder. If someone wants to send you a file, they can open your dropbox in Tor Browser using an onion link. Navigate to Status > Show Dropbox URL to find it.
Tor is software that connects thousands of volunteers around the world running a large multi-layer proxy that hides your location and protects your communication. π° dusk piggybacks on Tor to provide a private and anonymous network layer.
No! π° dusk can run offline from USB drives too!
Using Tor and a WebDAV app! See the remote access section of the User Guide.
π° dusk never stores your passphrase. When you enter a password, it is used to encrypt/decrypt a secret key which is then used to perform operations.
When you first setup π° dusk, it generates a secret key. If you forget your password or lose your secret key, you can recover it using the 24 word backup phrase.
